PRINCE GEORGE– Big news coming from the Caledonia Nordic Ski Club as a grant was approved by the BC Destination Development Fund which will see $1 million dollars going toward paved roller ski/roller biathlon competition trails. With the upgrades, it also brings a new sport to the area. Roller Skiing.

“Roller skiing and roller biathlon now are very big sports on the Nordic scene. So basically transferring what was done in the winter into the summer. They’re very, big in Europe and there are lots of events that are sanctioned right up to World Cup events.” – Kevin Pettersen, Caledonia Nordic Ski Club

The grant money will not only be making the Ski Club a year-round place to ski, but it also puts Prince George on the Nordiq map, as it’s a new place for athletes to train that very few cities across Canada have.

“It’s a game changer not only for our club and community but also the country. This will be one of the very few in North America where it’s a competition-ready paved trail.” – Kevin Pettersen, Caledonia Nordic Ski Club

Kevin Peterson also mentioned that a big reason to push for the grant was the great opportunity to host big events throughout the entire year. Which not only helps the Caledonia Nordic Ski Club gain a reputation but also the community. CEO of Tourism PG Colin Carson agreed with Peterson on all levels saying it’s not only a great thing to see for the Club, but also for the Tourism side.

“I think it kind of ticks two boxes there. It’s great for training now in the summer and opens some doors for athletes from all over the world to get access to a world-class facility and train here in Prince George. I think the other really exciting thing is now there’s a possibility to hold some roller ski competitions here as well.” – Colin Carson, CEO, Tourism Prince George

Paving is planned to get underway in the Summer of 2024 with the rest of this remaining year being used to plan and design.
