The River Forecast Centre has issued an update on the flood and high streamflow advisory for several areas in North Interior, including the Upper Fraser River, Middle Fraser tributaries, Nazko, West Road, and Quesnel River.

According to the update, the River Forecast Centre is maintaining or upgrading to a Flood Watch for Upper Fraser River and tributaries upstream of Prince George, including the McGregor River, Willow River, Bowron River, and surrounding tributaries. The Middle Fraser, including the Cariboo mountains and tributaries east of Quesnel, and Middle Fraser plateau areas west of Quesnel, Williams Lake, Lhoosk’uz Dene, and surrounding areas are also maintained in the flood watch. Nazko River and West Road River are also included in the flood watch.

Moreover, the River Forecast Centre is maintaining a High Streamflow Advisory for the North Interior, including the Upper Fraser watershed, including plateau areas around Prince George, Chilako River, Chuchinka River, Salmon River, and surrounding areas.

Flows throughout the region are flowing at or approaching the 2-year to 5-year flow level. Plateau tributaries have shown signs of diminished snowpack, with stabilized river levels over the past few days. In tributaries draining from higher terrain, ongoing rises have been underway due to accelerated snowmelt over the past week. Accelerated rises in river levels are anticipated on Sunday and into Monday due to forecasted rainfall on Saturday and Sunday.

The public is advised to stay clear of fast-flowing rivers and potentially unstable riverbanks. The advisory suggests avoiding recreational activities such as fishing, swimming, boating, or hiking near high streamflow rivers or streams. High streamflow can easily trap strong swimmers, increasing the risk of drowning. The public is also encouraged to visit www.PreparedBC/floods to understand the risks and get prepared.

The River Forecast Centre continues to monitor the conditions and will provide updates as conditions warrant. For emergency information and related resources, the public is advised to visit www.EmergencyInfoBC.ca.
