Evacuation alert lifted for Fort St. John
FORT ST JOHN — Residents of Fort St. John in northeastern B-C can rest easier as the city has rescinded an evacuation alert issued two days ago as wildfires threatened.
An update on the city’s website says the alert has been lifted for all properties and its roughly 21,000 residents can safely resume everyday activities.
The B-C Wildfire Service says a change in wind direction aided firefighters working overnight to battle several blazes around the city, including the Stoddart Creek fire that’s now estimated to be 215 square kilometres in size.
Fire information officer Hannah Swift says firefighters are watching the forecast closely as hotter conditions may be on the way, with potentially problematic winds expected to arrive later today.
