CALGARY — WestJet and the Air Line Pilots Association (ALPA) have announced a tentative agreement at the 11th hour to avoid a strike, early this morning.

Alexis von Hoensbroech, WestJet Group Chief Executive Officer, says that “The WestJet Group is pleased to have reached a tentative agreement that is industry-leading within Canada and recognizes the important contributions of our valued pilots by providing meaningful improvements to job security and scope, working conditions and wages.”

A statement from the Air Line Pilots Association (ALPA) says that union leaders voted to approve and agreement in principle, with a membership vote to start in the coming days.

Bernard Lewall, head of the union’s WestJet contingent said that “this contract will also help solve many of WestJet’s pilot attraction and retention issues, benefiting everyone involved from our company to our passengers and fellow employees.”

WestJet says that they are now ramping up their operations after flights started to be cancelled yesterday, but say that the full resumption of operations will take time.

Guests are still encouraged to check the status of their flights before leaving for the airport.
