PRINCE GEORGE — The BC Wildfire Service has provided an update on the Milligan Lake wildfire.

The service says that the wildfire is now at 70 hectares in size, is out of control and is suspected to be caused by lightning.

In a statement, the BCWS says that “this fire is currently burning in M-1 fuel type (boreal mixed wood) and is exhibiting Rank 4 behaviour at the head and Rank 2 behaviour along the flanks. The change in status is a result of increased fire behaviour due to continued hot, dry conditions and local winds that exceeded forecasted maximum speeds. This created fire behaviour that spotted outside of existing containment lines, causing a small excursion in an easterly direction.”

Air tankers actioned the fire through the evening and tanker action has now been completed for the day. One unit crew is currently on scene and an additional unit crew is en route and will arrive on Saturday. There are additional aviation supports assigned to this incident. Heavy equipment will be working to establish new and strengthen existing containment lines.
