Concerns of floods rise after rainy weekend

PRINCE GEORGE- It was a much-needed cold and rainy weekend in the north-central interior.

After a busy start to the wildfire season things are starting to settle down with the current climate.

All evacuation orders related to wildfires in northeastern British Columbia have now been lifted or downgraded to evacuation alerts. This includes Fort St. John and the Fort Nelson area.

The wildfire service said they will be monitoring the weather over the week. However, with the precipitation, other concerns are rising.

A flood watch has been issued for the Upper Fraser River. It includes the tributaries upstream of Prince George, including the McGregor River, Willow River, Bowron River, and Dakehl territory.

The River Forecast Centre says many rivers in the Cariboo and Upper Frasere are flowing very high for the time of year due to recent hot temperatures and rapid snowmelt.

Despite these flood warnings and high-stream advisories, the city isn’t worried for anyone’s safety.

“Our river heights that allow for evacuation alerts and orders in that Ferrell Street area are a full meter away. So we’re fairly confident that we’re not going to hit those this week,” said Tanya Spooner, the Manager of Emergency Programs.

Both Spooner and the Wildfire Service reiterated the fact despite the damp weather a category two and three burn Prohibition remains in effect.
