B.C. outlier when it comes to hiring physician assistants

PRINCE GEORGE — Our health care system has been dealing with a lot since the pandemic and physician assistants (PA’s) are present in all but 2 provinces, and B.C. is one of those provinces.

There has been a lot of talk recently about what needs to be done to help our health care system. In B.C., almost a million residents have no family doctor and lack access to primary care. One group of medical professionals, say they can help fill in the gap and they’re physician assistants.

Physician assistants are “advanced practice clinicians who are educated in the medical model and practice medicine under the supervision of a licensed physician with negotiated autonomy, often within a multidisciplinary health team.” PA’s are highly skilled health professionals and can work in any clinical setting to extend a doctor’s reach, and some key functions they perform include:

  • conducting physical exams
  • ordering and interpreting tests
  • prescribing medications and developing treatment plans
  • providing patient counseling and preventative health care; and
  • assisting in surgery

We reached out to the Ministry of Health for comment on why the province has not adopted a physician assistant program, saying that enabling the practice of a new group healthcare providers requires careful consideration, management and significant resources. The ministry also says that there are no known care gaps that can only solely be addressed by physician assistants.

Currently, there are no post-secondary programs in B.C. to train physician assistants, but PA’s argue that by adopting a program to teach and hire PA’s could greatly benefit patients and doctors and others within the health care system.
