PRINCE GEORGE- The Prince George Spruce Kings were busy Monday morning, announcing the commitment of three players.

Defenceman Evan Bellamy (’05), goaltender Marcus Ouellet (’04), and forward Dylan Wegner (’04) have committed to the team for the 2023-24 season.

Bellamy from New Brunswick spent last season as a member of the Grand Falls Rapids of the Maritimes Junior A Hockey League. The 18-year-old played in 46 games and tallied seven goals and 30 assists.

“Evan has a great on-ice skillset that is complimented by his worth ethic and high compete level,” said Spruce Kings associate coach Brad Tesink.

Ouellet comes to the northern capital from Toronto, Ontario and spent last season playing for the Cochrane Crunch of the Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League.

Finally, Dylan Wegner spent last season playing for the Aberdeen Wings of the North American Hockey League. Wegner is the product of Nashville, Tennessee.

The three commitments come after the BCHL Cut ties with Hockey Canada Thursday.

“Evan Bellamy is an example of a defenseman coming from the Maritimes in New Brunswick, In past years, we wouldn’t even have been able to talk to this young man because he was a property of another junior team,” said Mike Hawes, the General Manager of the Prince George Spruce Kings.

Ultimately, Hawes says that these new recruiting strategies will make for a better product come the start of the regular season.

“I don’t even want to say arguably anymore. The BCHL is the best junior league in the country, It has been for a long, long time,” said Hawes. ” the product we’ll put on the ice in this arena from our team and the teams that come in and play us, it’s going to be an exciting brand of hockey.”
