The Exploration Place to host world wars exhibit highlighting contributions of women

PRINCE GEORGE — A new exhibit highlighting the contributions of Canadian women in both world wars is coming to The Exploration Place.

World War Women will be on display from June 10 until September 3 and will be divided into four thematic zones.

Organizers say it uses artifacts, images, audiovisuals and archival materials to delve into the personal stories of Canadian women during the world wars. The exhibition also includes stories about grieving wives, mothers and sisters who lost loved ones during the wars.

“Together, these stories paint a picture of how women’s lives and social roles were transformed in wartime,” reads a press release. “Their experiences forged a new understanding of women’s capabilities, both within society and within themselves.”

Acting Vice-President and Director General of the Canadian War Museum Dean F. Oliver says thousands of women served in the military during the two world wars.

“Many thousands more made invaluable contributions at home, in everything from agriculture to industry to social services. Despite gender barriers, the wars provided women with unprecedented opportunities in all areas of Canadian society. This travelling exhibition tells of these women in their own voices.”
