PRINCE GEORGE — At Spruceland Elementary, the 2nd annual Girls at Bat Tournament took place, with schools participating from across Prince George. While only in its second year, the event has already grown, with two schools participating last year, and four this year. All schools participating this year are Spruceland, Hart Highlands, Pinewood and Beaverly.

The school involved in this year’s tournament are affiliate school with the Jays Care Foundation, the charitable organization for the Toronto Blue Jays. Girls at Bat is an introductory level baseball program designed to reduce some of the biggest barriers anyone identifying as a girl may face when accessing or participating in sport.

Girls need to have those connections and relationships with each other and to want to engage fully and participate. And I think that we’ve done that with our girls. Danielle and I definitely did it last year here at Spruceland and just to see the growth of the girls and it’s not even necessarily how they play, but their confidence level and how they carry themselves. – Jacqui Adams, Community School Coordinator, Spruceland Elementary
