To Your Health: Electrolytes
PRINCE GEORGE — As summer time is just around the corner, many will heading outdoors to enjoy the nice weather, but a key part in staying healthy during the heat involves electrolytes, we learn more about electrolytes in this week’s to your health.
With the weather getting hotter, we are likely to get more de-hydrated as we spent lots of time outdoors in the heat, and electrolytes not only play a role in helping us stay hydrated, but are essential for basic life functioning.
“So the whole reason behind using electrolytes is to actually keep the cell hydrated. So there’s going to be things in electrolytes like sodium and potassium that actually help shuttle the water into the cell for the hydration. And then there’s other components such as magnesium, that is a muscle relaxant and calcium that is in charge of contractions. So when you’re actually getting the full spectrum of everything, you’re getting really good neurological function as well as muscle function.” – Cara Roberts, Active Body Nutrition
