PRINCE GEORGE — Mary Jago started Horse Back riding at the age of 55. She’s now 79 years old turning 80 in the coming days and her passion for Equestrian and horses trots on.

“It’s kept me physically fit, mentally alert. A horse teaches you so much in terms of interacting with other animals or with people. They’re just wonderful creatures.”

The love is something she attributes to her father, who also loved horses and worked with them as Jago was growing up.

“My father was what you would call a horse whisperer. He was amazing with horses. And when I was four years old, we lived on a farm and he used to break horses for people. And when he was finished, he would set me on the back of the horse and lunge me around”

Jago admits there were some challenges when she first started riding and sometimes there are mornings where she aches all over and doesn’t want to ride but she knows once she’s on the back of that horse it’s a whole different feeling. A place to get away and enjoy it all.

“If I’m ever stressed or low, I just come out and get on my horse. I go back into my arena and I feel at perfect peace and I just ride my horse and it’s just wonderful. And I’ll go as long as I can. The queen went until she was 90. So I’ll just keep going as long as I can.”

Jago credits a lot of her skills to her trainer Jodie Kennedy who helped train her and her horse Taz. Now the goal is to continue riding horses until she can’t anymore.
