PRINCE GEORGE — Today the Lheidli T’enneh First Nation accepted a pledge from Prince George Pediatricians to acknowledge unceded ancestral lands.

Today, councillors from the Lheidli T’enneh First Nation accepted a pledge from Prince George Pediatricians of a respectful acknowledgement of Lheidli T’enneh Unceded Ancestral Lands. Councillor John West is a newly elected member of the Lheidli T’enneh council and for him, this acknowledgment is a positive step in the right direction of more people, groups and organizations recognizing the unceded ancestral lands of the Lheidli T’enneh.

As a young Indigenous person, to be able to see that the health care system, which is usually iffy with Indigenous folks, that they are taking the steps to mend that bond slowly. I think this is a good start to bettering the relationship with Indigenous people and the health care system.” – Councillor John West, Lheidli T’enneh First Nation

Dr. Kirsten Miller was presented with three plaques recognizing the pledge, one to be displayed in the office by the majority of Prince George pediatricians while the other two will be displayed. Dr. Miller says that this acknowledgement can help start a conversation.

We’re trying to think about what are other things we can do and how can we move forward in terms of, you know, honoring truth and reconciliation and helping families feel comfortable. It may feel simple and it may feel like a small thing, but it’s an important thing and it is meant to be a first step or one step of many.” – Dr. Kirsten Miller, Medical Lead, NHA Child & Youth Health Program

Dr. Miller also mentioned that this step also recognizes the many patients who come from other First Nations communities across Northern BC for care.

The Prince George Pediatricians group includes Dr. Kirsten Miller, Dr. Bill Abelson, Dr. Tahir Chaudhry, Dr. Simon Earl, Dr. Emilie Jean-St-Michel, Dr. Lara Malks-Jjumba, Dr. Jessica Strong and Dr. James Toft.
