Grant program aims to hire, train and retain highway maintenance workers
PRINCE GEORGE — Highway maintenance contractors are facing a shortage of workers, but a new grant hopes to improve the situation.
Job seekers across B.C. and the North will have the chance to learn more about highway maintenance jobs through a new grant to BC Road Builders and Heavy Construction Association. One of the main objectives of the grant program seeks to address a critical shortage of skilled workers for trained highway maintenance positions.
Highway maintenance workers undertake a variety of tasks, including keeping tens of thousands of kilometers of roads clear 365 days a year. For prospective job seekers, the BC Road Builders and Heavy Construction Association will be going a province wide roadshow to provide hands-on opportunities for participants such as a customized 34 foot trailer featuring simulators and virtual reality technology and realistic and safe training environments on five different simulators that replicate different models of heavy equipment and attachments.
