O’Grady name change around the corner

PRINCE GEORGE – The name of a road in College Heights will be moving ahead quickly, as was updated to Council tonight.

Back in July of 2012, the Lheidli T’enneh requested of Council to change the name of O’Grady Road following the discovery of 215 remains at a residential school in May of that year.

Bishop O’Grady was principal of the Kamloops Residential School from 1939 to 1952. After leaving Kamloops, he became the Principal for the Cariboo Indian Residential School.

Council has heard the latest update from Administration, which involves Canada Post sending out letters to affected residents and businesses along O’Grady Road next week.

Properties which will be directly by the road name change will be provided with a mailout notification 6 weeks in advance of the change. As part of the notification, property owners will be provided with a list of recommended areas they will need to change their address, such as ICBC.

As part of the road name change process, Canada Post will provide 1 year of free mail forwarding for all impacted properties. Emergency services will be updated immediately as well as City of Prince George services, Fortis, BC Hydro, Telus, and Shaw and Recycle BC.
