PRINCE GEORGE — As National Fishing Week begins, we decided to take a look at what the Prince George area has to offer in terms of lakes, rivers, and the hottest lures to get a fish on.

Central BC is filled with lakes when you look at it from above, in 100 km radius of city limits there are over 1000 lakes, many of those stocked with rainbow trout.

River fishing is also extremely popular, with the Nechako River serving a wide array of species.

“Many of the local lakes that we’ve got are stocked usually with rainbow trout,” said Steve Hamilton, Conservation, Hunting, Angling, and Firearms Policy & Engagement Coordinator for the BC Wildlife Federation. “We’ve got Shane Lake up at Forest for the World, we’ve got Ferguson Lake, we’ve got Eena Lake, Nukko Lake, Ness Lake, you name it there’s a lake close to Prince George and chances are your licensed dollars have helped stock it.”

The other piece to the fishing puzzle are the lures used to catch the fish and there are some specific kinds for our area that work best.

According to Myles Thrift a fishing expert at Corlane Sporting Goods, if you’re fishing for lake trout or char, and a lake with kokanee in it you want something with blue and silver. Any of the flatfish, FST, swim whizz or apex lures are popular too.

Thift said blue fox and wedding bands stand out as some of the most sold from the store to catch rainbow trout in our area.

Just make sure whatever you buy, or plan to use that it is your ‘lucky’ one.
