Confusion and chaos as hundreds of young gulls roam downtown mall, waiting to take flight

PRINCE GEORGE – If you close your eyes, the parking lot at Parkwood Place looks and sounds like oceanfront property. Hundreds of young gulls have made this downtown location a place to roost.

It’s rare to see hundreds of gulls walking in a busy parking lot. This behaviour concerns a local bird rescue society.

“ Our ultimate goal is to hopefully work with some authorities or local managements around here to build deterrents, to stop the birds from nesting in this area. It’s a bad place for the birds, and they’re quite a nuisance to the businesses and the people that shop and frequent this area.”

Amy Brown

Good Caws Crow Rescue Society

Bird Book Author and watcher Clive Keen says the birds creating all the noise are native to this area.

“ They are colonial breeders. So you don’t just get a couple of them. They come in groups, they all breed, and there are all these youngsters; they are days old.

So they glide down from the roof, they can’t fly, there are naive. They don’t know about getting out of the way. “

Clive Keen

Bird Book Author

Keen says it’s a wonderful time of year to see the number of birds; however, it creates confusion for those who may need to be more familiar with the ring-billed gull. These young gulls are expected to walk around for the next few days until they learn to fly.
