Mai Thai Restaurant in Prince George Shifts Business Model, Focusing on Takeout and Limited Dine-in Options

PRINCE GEORGE – A longtime family-owned restaurant in downtown Prince George will change how they do business. Due to high labour and food costs, they have reconsidered how they will serve their food.

Owner of the Mai Thai Restaurant Dale McDermid and his staff have offered table service for over twenty years at their restaurant. But with increased business costs, McDermid plans to modify how he runs things.

“Well, we’re looking very seriously at having no table service. Same menu. Dine in if you want, or take it home. But no table service along the lines of Tim Horton.”

During the pandemic’s height, all the food made was prepared for takeout. From this experience, McDermid noticed a major cost saving.

Rethinking how they do business doesn’t come as a surprise to business expert Charles Scott.

“ If you take a look at demographics, we’re simply going to have fewer numbers of more expensive labour. So businesses can’t keep doing what they did in 2018 and 2023.”

Over the next few months, the Mai Thai restaurant plans to make the changes to survive, and the hope is the consumers will adapt with them.
