Evacuation order expanded for Finger Lake wildfire – evacuees being sent to Prince George

VANDERHOOF — An evacuation order expansion has been issued due to potential danger to life and health by Saik’uz First Nation, recreation sites and Trails BC and the Regional District of Bulkley-Nechako due to the Finger Lake wildfire.

This expansion broadens the evacuation order issued on July 8, 2023 at 2330 and is for the following area:

All lands and properties accessed by the Bobtail Connector FSR & the 600 Road FSR south of the Meridian Road/Vanderhoof Ecological Reserve. This includes the Meridian Road/Vanderhoof Ecological Reserve, the Chilako River Ecological Reserve, a portion of Finger-Tatuk Park, and several provincial recreation sites, as shown on the attached map.

Authorities say you must leave the area immediately and register at the reception centre.

“Persons who disregard this Evacuation Order and remain in the Evacuation Order area do so at their own risk. The Regional District of Bulkley-Nechako may be unable to assist anyone who remains in the Evacuation Order area,” reads the order

  • If you need transportation assistance from the area, please advise the individual providing this notice or call the Regional District of Bulkley-Nechako at 250-692-1553.
  • Close all windows and doors.
  • Shut off all gas and electrical appliances, other than refrigerators and freezers.
  • Close gates (latch) but do not lock.
  • Gather your family: take a neighbour or someone who needs help.
  • Take critical items (medicine, purse, wallet, and keys) only if they are immediately available. Take pets in pet kennels or on a leash.
  • Do not use more vehicles than you must.
  • If you require assistance for livestock, please call the Regional District of Bulkley-Nechako at 250-692-1553.
  • Evacuees: If you need to stay at a hotel or campground register at the Prince George Reception Centre at the Kin1 Centre at 2181 Ospika Boulevard S, Prince George or contact the Emergency Support Services Director at 778-675-3735.
  • Emergency Support Services can provide assistance for food, accommodation (hotel or staying with friends and family), clothing, emotional support, and family reunification.

The BC Wildfire Service says the Finger Lake wildfire was lightning-caused and is 270 hectares in size. It’s located southwest of Finger Lake and approximately 60 kilometres southwest of Vanderhoof. It was first discovered on July 7.
