How to be fire smart at home this summer

PRINCE GEORGE- The wildfire season in our area has been ruthless in the Prince George Fire Centre this year.

Fuels are dry and the heat will likely intensify as the calendar flips to August. Now more than ever we are being reminded to be fire smart around our homes.

“Fire Smart is a set of principles that you can use to identify the weaknesses and strengths that your home has in terms of resiliency when it comes to a wildfire,” said Colby Molcak with FireSmart BC.

While it may seem like the sprinkler on your front lawn is enough to keep your property safe, FireSmart BC says otherwise. You can look for many things around your house that may be dangerous.

Cleaning the fallen pine needles under your evergreens, trimming the branches on your tree below six feet and keeping the cushions of your outdoor furniture indoors unless they are in use are all examples of how you can be fire smart this summer.

Other things that could be dangerous around the home are home decor signs, coconut brooms and mates, firewood against the house, barbeques against the house, and jerry cans against the house.

Making sure your gutters are clean is essential. Things like decorative pinecones and branches are also dangerous.
