Ask the Expert: Is the Fraser River actually that dirty?
While the mighty Fraser River may seem very brown and dirty from the surface we had to ask an expert to find out the truth from Dr. Stephen Dery, a UNBC Professor who studies and monitors rivers and waterways.
So is it really that dirty? The answer is no at least not here in Prince George. You can still swim in it stress free, while you may want to avoid the deep spots with the incredible currents that lie underneath the surface. As explained above, the reason why the Fraser River appears so murky is simply the amount of sediment that travels southbound. You’ll notice if you travel east, the river is not nearly as clouded with dirt, a reflection of the contents on the banks and on the riverbed.
