VANDERHOOF – Vanderhoof’s homegrown butcher shop, The Speckled Sow, has achieved provincial recognition as a top small business in British Columbia. CKPG News met with a couple dedicated to their unique venture despite unconventional career preferences.

Brittany and Matt Giesbrecht are a young couple from northern B.C. who are trying to make a go at living a full-filled life. They were chosen this summer from 613 nominees from 84 B.C. communities as one of the top small businesses in the province.

The couple grew up on farms. Both saw a shortage of butchers in the Vanderhoof area. They took a leap of faith a few years ago and started their butcher shop.

The Giesbrechts’ took some of their farm life experience, watched hours of Do It Yourself videos and successfully put The Specked Sow on the map.

During those busy periods, family and friends help with the workload. Their facility was recently approved as a licenced to operate as a slaughter establishment.

The Giesbrechts’ emphasize that supporting farmers and small enterprises contributes directly to the local economy. The award-winning butcher shop is skilled in handling both wild game and domestic animals.
