PRINCE GEORGE — The 1697’s Rugby Club will be sending athletes from all over Northern BC down to Kamloops at the end of September to participate in the biggest sevens tournament in Western Canada.

The main goal is to grow the sport of Rugby here in Prince George and get kids playing time on the field. The club is always looking for new members and will help new or experienced players learn the sport and give them as much on-field experience as possible.

One of those athletes trying to get that experience is Nadya Christel-Strand who makes the 8-hour trip to Prince George from Prince Rupert to practice with the club. Her goal is to get as much on-field action as possible, with Prince Rupert’s rugby scene not as consistent as other towns or cities. She’ll be taking part in the Kamloops sevens tournament as well.

As for Prince George, many continue trying to grow the sport of Rugby including new coach Ashley Wilkinson. She’s not only helping out with the 1697s but also trying to get a rugby program up and going for Duchess Park Secondary School. Providing another opportunity for schools in the district to get more playing time against other athletes.

The club is still looking for members to join and even play in the upcoming tournament in Kamloops which takes place on September 30th. They encourage kids interested in trying the sport to come out to their practices at College Heights Secondary on Tuesday and Thursday.
