Tourism in PG up despite wildfire season being at an all-time high

PRINCE GEORGE – Summer tourism in Prince George is coming to a close and after a season taken over by wildfire smoke, how did that impact our city? Surprisingly, it had very little impact. COVID brought the city’s tourist numbers down substantially, and this year those numbers had some positive growth.

“I mean, I think it was it was an interesting summer, from the Prince George perspective. We’ve still dealt with some smoke, but we were relatively safe from a from a forest fire perspective. So, I think in that sense, it didn’t impact the tourism numbers as much as we saw in some places in the Okanagan Counties.”

– Colin Carsen, CEO of Tourism PG

Tourism is important for hotels, motels, and INNs, including Bon Voyage INN.

“We have to say, this the first year after COVID where we actually had tourists again and we had a great number. We’ve had bus tours back. We’ve had people that rent a car, or RV and travel on their own through the region. We’ve had motorbike tours. We’ve had a lot of things happening. Also, for our local people, they’re traveling more than before. We have fishing and hunting trips again, which were pretty much totally at a standstill during the COVID times.”

– Elke Hierl-Steinbauer, Manager of Bon Voyage INN

“This has been a great summer so far, and we’re quite pleased with the outcome for our business and people have already been starting to book for 2024 as well.”
