Poilievre’s visit to Smithers, Terrace sparks response from Bachrach

SMITHERS — Conservative Party of Canada Leader Pierre Polievre paid northwest B.C. a visit Thursday, and NDP MP for Skeena-Bulkley Valley Taylor Bachrach, has weighed in.

“People in the Northwest remember how 10 years of Poilievre and the Harper government harmed our region,” said MP Bachrach (Skeena-Bulkley Valley). “Right now, times are tough for a lot of folks, especially working people. Tough times call for workable solutions that bring people together, not the kind of extreme politics we’ve seen from his party.”

“It’s one thing to tap into people’s anger, it’s another to propose policies that work for rural communities in places like ours,” Bachrach continued. “When we look at the 10 years Poilievre was in government, a lot of his agenda caused pain here. That’s something people still remember.”

Bachrach says Poilievre’s track record includes the following:

• He voted against dental care and pharmacare.

• He repeatedly voted for back-to-work legislation instead of standing with workers on strike.

• He voted against even having a federal minimum wage.

• He pushed the Enbridge pipeline and voted to lift the tanker moratorium and bring crude oil to our coast and watersheds.

• He voted to raise the retirement age to 67.

Bachrach says one thing missing from the Conservative platform is an effective plan to help northern communities.

“Rural communities face many challenges and we need strong voices from all parties fighting for better services and federal investment. Frankly, I haven’t seen that yet from Poilievre and the Conservatives.”
