PRINCE GEORGE — BC United, making an announcement on Sunday, on who will take up the torch to run for the party in the riding of Prince George-Mackenzie. Mike Morris announced in March that he would not be running in the next election, leaving the door open, and the person chosen by the party, was Kiel Giddens.

Giddens is the former president of the Prince George Chamber of Commerce and currently serves on the Board of Directors for the Spirit of the North Healthcare Foundation. He says he is ready for the work that lies ahead.

“It’s a lot of work ahead, but I’m excited. I’ve got a background in politics but also in the private sector, and I want to bring that to the ideas forward and and bring that to my time and hopefully get to Victoria to represent the people here in Prince George-Mackenzie.” – Kiel Giddens, BC United Candidate for Prince George-Mackenzie

The BC United name change and re-brand is still relatively new, meaning that a win for the party in safe ridings like Prince George-Mackenzie, may not be so safe this time around.

“Whoever got the B.C. United nomination in might have looked like a shoo in and you would probably still put them as the favorite. But now with the surge in B.C. conservatives in the polls and that the two of them fighting it out, as you will for the center right vote, might give NDP a chance in a place like Prince George.” – Chris Beach, Political Science Instructor

Giddens says that there are a number of issues, like affordability, healthcare and housing, that the current NDP government is not dealing with adequately.

“These are issues that the current government is not addressing well, and we need better ideas. We need free enterprise solutions and business solutions also at the table. And I’m going to bring those ideas to Victoria. I think that young families need a champion here in the legislature. So that’s what I’m going to fight to try to do.” – Kiel Giddens, BC United Candidate for Prince George-Mackenzie

The next provincial election must be on or before October 19, 2024.
