Special Truth and Reconciliation events at UNBC

PRINCE GEORGE – There was a lot of orange on campus at UNBC and special events such as a blanket ceremony in the Bentley Centre, with a presentation about the history of Canadian colonization of First Nations. In the Student Centre, students gathered to use the art of origami to make ravens. And there’s a reason for that.

“And when you think about a thousand cranes, if you make a thousand cranes, the old legend goes that you get a wish. So we thought, well, what a great way to make an origami raven, because Ravens represent in the indigenous world as tricksters. It’s a tricky way of teaching you something really difficult. And reconciliation, as we all know, is difficult,” explains Bev Best, the Former Manager of the First Nations Centre and whose brainchild this is. “And trust me, making an origami raven is not easy. So you might need your peers help. You might need somebody to help make the raven. But the idea is, once there’s a thousand Ravens made, we get the wish granted to UNBC. Reconciliation.”
