Carrier Sekani Family Service opens new sobering centre
PRINCE GEORGE—Prince George has access to a new sobering centre operated by Carrier Sekani Family Services in partnership with the Province and Northern Health.
The centre is a 10-bed facility that provides a safe space for people 18 and older who are intoxicated and unable to care for themselves. People can refer themselves or they can be referred by a someone else such as a family member, health-care providers, and emergency services.
Travis Holyk, executive director of health with Carrier Sekani Family Services, says they are happy to help provide this service and sees it a required part of care for vulnerable community members.
The centre is located at 1133 Second Ave and is open to clients overnight, from Thursday to Sunday. Various support services will be added gradually until the centre is able to support clients seven days a week, 24 hours a day. Those supports will include laundry facilities, referral to community resources, snacks and a safe place to sleep.
