Hundreds sign petition calling on City to provide bear-resistant garbage cans

PRINCE GEORGE — Close to 600 people have signed a petition calling on the city to supply bear resistant garbage bins to residents.

The petition was started by the Northern Bear Awareness Society, who say residential waste is the top attractant for bears in Prince George.

In 2019, the city ran a bear resistant pilot project where 300 bear resistant garbage cans were provided to homes in neighbourhoods with higher rates of bear interactions.

Results of the pilot project indicated that the locking mechanism on the garbage cans unreliable during Prince George’s winter.
