Many community groups and non-profit organizations received large donations from Iris Energy on Wednesday, October 18. One of our newest industries, Iris Energy is a bitcoin mining and computing industry with several locations across the province, one of them being in Prince George.

As part of its community grants program, Iris Energy have given ten organizations grants of up to ten thousand dollars.

“We’ve got a number of employees that grew up and live here and are locals, and being able to give back to the community where we operate is just really important to the company as well as our core values. There’s a lot of great work being done here in Prince George and we want to be a part of it,” said Iris Energy’s Vice President of People, Culture, and Community Heather Miller.

Among the grant recipients was Lheidli T’enneh Nation, which will help them establish a community food fishery. The Nation’s Manager of Economic Development Allan Stroet says will be a tremendous help for both food sustainability and preserving Lheidii T’enneh culture.

“Having that traditional knowledge passed down from generation to generation is how it’s worked for the last tens of thousands of years,” he said.

The fishery will have elders pass on knowledge to younger members of the nation, and Stroet explained the grant from Iris Energy will really help the Nation’s culture flourish.

“If you end up just ignoring the past then you’re bound to forget it and then you’ll end up with a great deal of lost information and just traditional knowledge about how things used to be and how things could still be,” he said.
