PRINCE GEORGE – Council has opted to defer a request from the Royal Canadian Legion for some financial help in the in the run-up to Remembrance Day.
A pitch by the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 43, for some financial aid has been deferred until the next meeting, which will take place on November 20th.
In its letter to Council, the Legion writes:
“Our Legion organizes and operates the Remembrance Ceremonies to recognize the sacrifices made by our community members who lost their lives in service of Canada. Our ceremony is an example for many and incorporates three main elements. An indoor service, a parade to the cenotaph, and a brief outdoor and the cenotaph. These events are volunteer driven but do incur certain costs. The main costs include facility rental, food and hot chocolate for youth, and sound production for both those present and for live streaming.”
The Legion sought $18,000 to offset the cost, citing “meager gaming funds.”
However, Council noted there is a policy in place that requires one meeting’s gap before deciding on how to spend Council Contingency fund money.
In the meantime, there was a call for “someone in the community to step up” in time for this Remembrance Day, which takes place next Saturday.
