Prince George – Active Support Against Poverty’s (ASAP) Executive Director Kim DeMeyer was recognized with this year’s Bob Scott Award for ASAP’s significant contributions to the community.

This is the second Bob Scott Award given, and the award is named after Bob Scott, who founded the organization D.A.R.T. (Drug Awareness Recovery Team) 26 years ago. To commemorate the legacy of Bob Scott, the award is given to community members or organizations that exemplify integrity, leadership, and significant contributions.

“Given all the number of people in this community who participate in attempting to help out our less advantaged folks, it was just such an honor to be to be recognized,” DeMeyer said.

ASAP’s goal is to help our homeless and disadvantaged population however they can. To achieve this they offer a wide variety of services, including but not limited to:

  • Subsidized housing
  • Helping people find employment
  • Shelter Services
  • Help with taxes
  • Mailing services
  • Phone access
  • Legal advocacy

Legal advocacy is a particularly big focus of ASAP, as DeMeyer explained going through mountains of paperwork to access services, or any potential legal troubles or disputes, can be a huge roadblock in helping someone succeed.

“It’s really overwhelming. And we see people who’ve got varying degrees of literacy and to be sat down with a stack a paper or even put in front of a computer, it’s too much for them. So that’s what we’re here for.”

ASAP’s ultimate goal is to provide as many services as possible so people can get all the support they need in one place, rather than wander around the city looking for where they need to go. However, DeMeyer also knows there are many other incredible community groups and is happy to work

“We do as much as we can here and what we can’t do, then we will start referring. There’s so many organizations in town that want to help people, so we will work with those organizations as well.”
