PRINCE GEORGE – Several Prince George are preparing for upcoming provincial tournaments, and among them are the province’s third-ranked Senior Boys’ AA Duchess Condors and the fifth-ranked D.P. Todd Trojans. Both schools will be travelling to Langley for the tournament.

Trojans’ Coach Jonathan Lawrence says this is the best team he’s coached, and is looking forward to seeing what they can do against the province’s best teams.

“This is the best team in rankings going to provincials that I’ve ever been a part of. It’s a really great group of boys, huge amount of talent, but also a huge amount of character in these boys,” Jonathan said.

Explaining that the Trojans are literally a small team, as no player is taller than 6’2″, but the team’s chemistry has put them in a position to compete with anyone.

“We’re really cohesive, really great group of guys who play for each other, play for the love of the game, just love volleyball.”

As for the players, they’re excited for the trip and to continue building off of a great season, although the main focus is simply enjoying the moment.

“It’s definitely going to take a lot of hard work, but we’re just going down to have fun. No expectations, be ready, just do whatever we can to win,” starting centre Josiah Lawrence said.

“If we play loose, we have what it takes to win provincials. We just can’t be afraid to lose, right? To be a winning team you have to lose some, you have to win some, you have to take chances. You have to go for it at all times,” starting outside Kaiden Young added.

Both players are in Grade 12, which makes it all the more memorable to be ending their high school careers on a high note. For Josiah, he explained coach Jonathan Lawrence is actually his father, so sharing the experience of going to provincials will definitely be special.

“He’s always been my coach my whole life, and it’s just been a great experience all throughout high school and all my life. Just always having that supportive background and being able to support me with volleyball,” Josiah said.

Beyond D.P. Todd and Duchess heading to Langley, Cedars Christian School will actually be hosting the A boys’ zones tournament, and next week the Prince George High School will be hosting a 32 team Jr. volleyball championship. This tournament will take place at many schools, including Cedars, CNC, D.P. Todd, Shas Ti Kelly Road, and CHSS. Even though Jonathan’s Trojans team won’t be in Prince George, he hopes everyone supports our hometown teams that will be here.

“It is pretty neat that Prince George has two teams in the top six, which is pretty historically accurate, right? It seems like every year either us, College Heights, or Duchess Park are ranked in the top five. We have a really strong volleyball community in Prince George,” Jonathan said.
