Bear Lake Fire Department Service suspended due to insufficient training
PRINCE GEORGE— Unfortunate news for those living in the Bear Lake area as the Bear Lake Volunteer Fire Department (BLVFD) has announced they will be suspending their emergency response services, effective December 1, 2023. The suspension is a result of the volunteer firefighters not having sufficient training available to respond to emergency events.
Without the sufficient training the BLVFD is not in compliance with provincial structural firefighter training standards, WorkSafe B.C., and Occupational Health and Safety requirements.
The Regional District of Fraser-Fort George has said they will assist the BLVFD in continuing to provide training to it’s current few members. The Fire department is also calling on the community to join the volunteers and participate in the training sessions with the goal of working towards achieving compliance with the training requirements and eventually reinstating the ability to respond to emergency events in Bear Lake.
Volunteer firefighters are required to complete basic standardized training and attend 60 hours of training practices per year. Fire department practices occur once a week for a couple of hours, with more specialized training on weekends for those that are interested. If you are interested in learning more about joining the Bear Lake Volunteer Fire Department they suggest you should join by contacting the Regional District at 250-960-4400.
