Is a shift underway in provincial politics?

PRINCE GEORGE — A shift in provincial politics seems to be underway as new polling numbers have shown that support for the NDP government remains strong. Recent polling from Abacus Data shows that the NDP remains firmly in the lead with 44% saying they vote for the government if an election was held today.

The Conservative Party of BC has moved into second place with 26%, and the official opposition BC United Party slipping into third place with 17%. The Greens remain in fourth with 9%. Last month, the Conservatives and BC United were neck in neck at 22% and 21% respectively.

There are rumours swirling that an election could be held in the spring as the throne speech and budget speech are set to take place on the same week in February. However, Premier David Eby has consistently said that he will stick to the fixed election date in October of 2024.

The leader of the Conservative Party of B.C John Rustad says he is encouraged by the new poll numbers but says that only one poll will matter, and that is election night. Rustad mentioned that the party is seeing expansion mainly at the cost of the BC United Party, but also says that they are drawing from the NDP as well.

The next provincial election must be held on or before October 19, 2024.
