PRINCE GEORGE — The unemployment rate in Prince George came in at 6.1 per cent in December.

Statistics Canada says that’s up from 5.4 per cent in December 2022. Despite the increase, 1,500 more people were working in December compared to a year earlier which Labour Analyst Vincent Ferrao attributes to more people seeking employment.

He says the sectors seeing the highest growth in employment were construction, manufacturing and education with accommodation, food services and finance and real estate seeing the biggest declines.

Provincially, Ferrao says the unemployment rate rose to 5.6% in December, up from 5.3% in November. B.C. has the fourth lowest unemployment rate in the country. Manitoba has the lowest at 4.2 per cent while Newfoundland and Labrador has the highest, at 10.7 per cent.
