Omineca Arts Centre’s welcomes Izzy, January’s artist in residence

PRINCE GEORGE – Izzy is the Omineca Arts Centre’s newest artist in residence, and his official gallery opening is happening tonight (January 6) at 6:30 p.m. Focusing on surrealism with fantasy and horror influences, Izzy’s work features highly detail-oriented pieces blending these elements together.

“I guess in terms of medium, I tend to lean towards very stark, black and white graphite pen sort of works, trying to get that almost technical drawing feeling to them,” he said.

Like many artists, Izzy says he wouldn’t know what to do with his life without art. However, perhaps equally as influential is his strong interest in fantasy, as he grew up reading novels like Lord of the Rings and Dune, and he says his art is a way for him to get lost in his own fantasy worlds and ideas of what could be.

“I’ll generally put on music and let the rest of the world go and focus completely on the page. I work very often, very small with a lot of these pieces. So I’m very focused in on a very small little space in the world.”

As the artist in residence, Izzy will be in the studio several days a week working away, so if you drop him you could meet him and learn more about him and his art. On January 14 he will be holding a workshop called “an introduction to surrealist art,” and he says everyone is welcome and you don’t have to have any prior art experience to still enjoy the workshop.

“I think it’ll be a very open and collaborative experience, and though a lot of people say they have no artistic talent, no musical talent, no visual talent, I think we all have that drive for artistic creation in one way, shape, or form. And being in a space that’s open to that and supportive of that and trying to bring that out in people, I think that’s a very valuable sort of thing to do, and just fun.”

To see Izzy’s art and potentially meet him, you can visit the Omineca Arts Centre this month, as his gallery will be open for all of January and he will frequently be at the Centre.
