Arctic blast hits Northern B.C.: Prepare your home for minus-40

PRINCE GEORGE – An arctic airmass over northern B.C. will bring temperatures between minus 30 and 40 degrees Celsius. Preparing your home for the next deep may save you headaches and repair costs.

Copper water pipes that are near an outside wall have a chance of freezing if they are not insulated properly. Preparing now will ensure your home is in great shape for the minus-40 temperatures expected over the next few days.

“ And you’ll want to look for things like heat tape that you put on a pipe. It’s only suitable for pipes with water fastened with electrical tape.”

Northerly winds up to 20 km will combine with freezing temperatures, creating cold wind chills as low as minus 45. Relieving stress on your heating system can be achieved by slowing or stopping the draft.

If you think a pipe is frozen, call the plumber and wait to turn on your water again until they say it’s okay. Poor air circulation in the roof can cause ice damming, which creates water leaks into your home.

The forecast anticipates that the cold wind chills will persist until Saturday morning, when temperatures become more bearable.
