PRINCE GEORGE – For close to 15 years, Prince George Airport has hosted a non-stop flight to Puerto Vallarta. With the support of loyal passengers and a blast of arctic weather, the direct route continues to be popular, with northerners looking for the sand and sun.

CEO Prince George Airport Authority Gordon Duke recently arrived on the most recent flight from Puerto Vallarta, where he observed various passengers filling the plane.

“the one week or two weeks all-inclusive, whether it’s couples or families. And then we’re seeing the longer term snowbird, where they’re down there for a month, two months, three months. And it’s a real mix. And I think that builds loyalty for that flight and for expanding the service.”

Prince George Airport is the only airport of its size in the West that has a direct flight to warmer climates.

The extreme cold that covered the west affected the latest outbound flight from Prince George.

“ The industry suffered with Calgary being in that bitter cold, -45 and windchill equipment just doesn’t work. So WestJet had to cancel a significant number of flights in and out of their hub. Then, there’s a ripple effect through their whole network as they reposition an aircraft and, most importantly, crew to operate those flights safely.”

The current season’s direct flight is anticipated to wrap up on April 20th. Efforts are being made to prolong the flight season for PVR and explore additional warm destinations for direct flights.
