PRINCE GEORGE – It’s hard to love the game of basketball more than UNBC alumna, Alina Shakirova , who not only played five years with the Timberwolves but is now on the coaching staff for the women’s team.

“I think there’s a lot to gain from the community and I just want to keep growing. If I can build up on what was given to me […] and make more people love basketball, I would love to do this.”

– Alina Shakirova, Assistant Coach, UNBC Women’s Basketball

Now being an assistant coach who has played for head coach Sergey, Shakirova can help out the new players who might need some extra tidbits.

“I think it’s helping them to transition and then giving them some perspective and connecting them to Coach, which is really important. […] I can help them understand what Coach is asking them.”

As Shakirova mentioned, coaching is a good way to stay a part of basketball, but it might not be a long-term goal.

“I’m still learning, still seeing if it’s something for me. So far, I really like it and I’m planning to learn more about it and keep growing in that sphere and we’ll see where it takes me.”
