Prince George sees resurgence in canning tradition as concerns for regional food security grow
PRINCE GEORGE – Canning food is an age-old tradition making a comeback in Prince George. Due to the growing concerns of regional food security, more and more people are becoming interested in learning the art of canning. The COVID lockdowns brought this issue to the forefront.
The Prince George Canning Circle, a group of volunteers, was formed two years ago to teach people how to preserve food every week. In addition, the Aboriginal Business Development Centre hosted canning classes at the beginning of the year for those who wanted to save money as food costs increased.
“We asked people in our community what food security meant for them. And when we spoke with young people particularly, they said we wanted to learn how to preserve food. But that it had not been passed on to the kids. So it skipped a generation.”
