PRINCE GEORGE— The Special Olympics Canada Winter Games took place last week with five athletes from the area representing B.C. in curling, five pin bowling, and snowshoeing.

David Dunns and Marinka Van Hage competed in snowshoeing both earning personal best and medals. This was Dunns first time competing at the National level and he won gold for the 1600-Meter race and silver for the 4X100 meter relay. Van Hage earned silver in the 400-meter race and silver for the 4X100 meter relay.

Sam Russell and Spencer Rourke competed with the Quesnel Fury Curling Team. While they didn’t win a game they showcased teamwork and some good rock placements.

Lance Pattinson competed as a member of the Dawson Creek 5 pin bowling team. The team placed seventh in their division and fifth in singles.

Getting to the National level takes hard work and dedication from the athletes.

“As soon as they figured out that they were in Regionals and they qualify for Provincials, they sign a contract; they’re going to train so many times a week and watch what they eat and all that.” explains Coach Wilma VanHage ” They’ve been training a minimum of three times a week.”

The Special Olympics Canada Winter Games will take place again in 2028.
