First day of Biathlon World Championships saw two Canadian gold medalists
PRINCE GEORGE— It was a beautiful opening day for races at the Para Biathlon World Championships. The excellent conditions led to some great race times for Canada, including a thrilling tie.
Derek Zaplotinsky was the first athlete to represent Canada in a race. Racing in the mens’ sitting category the competitor finished fourth in the 7.5 km sprint with a time of 25 minutes and 18.8 seconds.
The next 7.5 km race in the womens’ standing category saw a tie between Ukraine and Canada. Liudmyla Liashenko (Ukraine) and Natalie Wilkie (Canada) finished the race in 24 minutes and 11.3 seconds. Brittany Hudak, representing Canada, followed behind the leading pack coming in third with 24 minutes and 51.7 seconds.
Mark Arendz led canada to victory in the mens’ standing category finishing the 7.5 km sprint in 21 minutes and 5.5 seconds.
