PRINCE GEORGE – Local comedian Brian Majore will be premiering his documentary “Other Voices” at the UNBC’s Weldwood Theatre tonight at 6:30.

Majore’s documentary focuses on local BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, People of Color) stand up comedians, and the importance of representation on stage.

“Representation matters. If someone sees themselves on stage doing standup comedy, then they feel ‘this is something I can do as well.’ And that’s why representation matters, to get more BIPOC people in stand up comedy,” Majore said.

Perhaps the biggest benefit of having more BIPOC comedians on stage is the feeling of togetherness and community it creates.

“This show featuring an all BIPOC lineup of comedians is akin to a an anti-racism workshop, but with laughs and drinks,” Majore said.

“Would you rather have someone up there giving a lecture like ‘this is how my life is, this is how I experienced racism. this is how my everyday is,’ or would you rather have someone making you laugh every 15 to 20 seconds?” he continued.

Kylie Lewis Holt is one of several local comedians features in “Other Voices,” and she says comedy does play a huge role in helping people understand one another in a lighthearted, fun atmosphere.

“Those of us that are married, we all go through the same thing. Those of us that have kids, it’s the same thing. It’s just the box (of chocolates) might look different. But once you open the box of chocolates, it’s the same flavours, you got your caramels, you got your nuts, you got everything. And we all we all bleed red, right?” Lewis Holt said.

“When you say your different experiences, that’s what comedy’s all about. You think that you’re living in such a different world. And because I’m BIPOC somehow we’re not experiencing the same thing. A lot of my comedy works with my family, my husband, and a lot of people feel the same way. And sometimes it can be funnier coming from someone that doesn’t really look like you, but is saying everything that you can relate to. And that’s always been my experience doing comedy,” she continued.

Beyond the premiere of the documentary, the standup comedians featured will also perform, and there will also be a Q and A period. The event begins at 6:30 at UNBC’s Weldwood Theatre.
