Carbon tax increase coming April 1st

Mar 15, 2024 | 2:35 PM

PRINCE GEORGE — The federal carbon tax is set to increase on April 1, but reaction to the increase has been swift and strong from politicians across the country. Premiers from seven provinces including Newfoundland and Labrador, Nova Scotia, PEI, New Brunswick, Saskatchewan, and Alberta, have called on Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to halt the tax, citing affordability concerns.

Provinces can decide to voluntarily adopt the federal carbon pricing system, but if a province doesn’t implement a price on carbon pollution, they are subject to the federal pricing system.

B.C. has their own carbon pricing system in place, and the government says that increases in tax go back to British Columbians through a tax credit.

“We’ve structured the carbon tax in a way that returns money to low and middle income British Columbians, which, of course would not happen if we ceased the carbon tax. What we do with the increases in the carbon tax is give 100% of it back to British Columbians in the Carbon Climate Action Tax Credit.” – George Heyman, Minister of Environment and Climate Change Strategy

The April 1 increase will be felt mostly at the pumps and through energy bills. The carbon tax will cost 17 cents a litre of gas, 21 cents a litre of diesel and 15 cents a cubic metre of natural gas.

B.C.’s carbon tax is set to rise from 65 dollars a tonne to 80 dollars a tonne on April 1.
