Celebrating Asian Heritage event to take place Friday

PRINCE GEORGE — Asian Heritage Month takes place in May but the Immigrant and Multicultural Services Society in Prince George will be celebrating Asian Heritage this upcoming Friday and is an opportunity for the whole community to celebrate the history, legacy and contributions of Asians in Prince George and the North.

The festival takes place from 4pm to 6pm at the Prince George Conference and Civic Centre, and is free for everyone.

The Chinese Consulate is coming with a cultural delegation on Thursday. They will perform an ancient instrument, they will bring different traditional customs, as well as some art (Chinese paintings) to show the population of Northern BC. As well, they will provide some tokens to the audience.

In 1919, over 500 Chinese labourers came to Prince George, British Columbia, to build the Pacific Trunk Railway in the region and 83 years later, the city had a Chinese Canadian population of almost 1,000 people, according to Statistics Canada.

There will be a ticketed dinner from 7:30pm-10pm with awards to follow, tickets can be purchased through IMSS. Tickets for the dinner are $50 for adults, $25 for children aged 6 to 10 years old and kids under 5 get in for free.
