PRINCE GEORGE — No, this is not an April Fools Day joke.

It’s going to cost 3.3-cents-a-litre more to gas up your vehicle starting Monday (April 1).

April 1 marks the day the national price on pollution rises by 15-dollars per tonne.

The consumer carbon levy rises on fossil fuel purchases in every province and territory except B.C., Quebec and the Northwest Territories.

B.C. and Northwest Territories each have their own, very similar carbon charge for consumers, while Quebec has an equivalent cap-and-trade system.

With the rise in the levy also comes a boost in the amount Canadians will get in their quarterly Canada Carbon Rebates.

The Canadian Taxpayers Federation says the carbon tax will cost the average family up to $911 more this year than they get back in rebates.

Ottawa also raised its excise tax on alcohol by two per cent without a vote in Parliament. This year’s federal alcohol tax increase will cost taxpayers $40 million.

In addition to this, MPs get a raise starting Monday and will receive between an extra $8,500 to $17,000. A backbench salary is now $203,100. A minister’s salary is $299,900, and the prime minister’s salary is now $406,200.
