Calico gets a checkup before he finds his new home

PRINCE GEORGE—Calico is a gelding quarterhorse mix in the care of the Prince George Animal Rescue. When he arrived he was underwieght and the veternarians were unsure of the last time he had a checkup. To make sure Calico is healthy and ready for his new home the vets did what is called a dental float.

“Horses have continuously growing teeth,” explains Dr. Maeghan Forster an associate veterinarian with Westwinds Mobile Vet Service. “Every year as they chew and chew, they’ll make sharp points. So, you file them down each year to basically keep them from scratching up the sides of their mouth and causing any harm.”

Once Calico is back to a healthy weight his personality will begin to shine.

“He has been really good. He’s been very respectful. Of course, he’s very depleted as well because he’s so underweight,” says Nicola Redpath, the owner of the Prince George Animal Rescue “So, once they get weight on them, their personalities will change. They can be a little bit more energetic.”

If you think you would make a great ‘furever’ home for this stunning steed you can visit the Prince George Animal Rescue or fill out the adoption papers online.
