McBride receives flood funding

NORTHERN BC – The Village of McBride sits along the Fraser River and, as such, is no stranger to the risk of flooding. But just under four years ago, something extraordinary happened.

“That particular year we had 220 percent-of-normal on the snowpack,” explains Mayor Gene Runtz. “And then we had a cold spring. And then in the latter part of June, we had a bunch of rain that came down. It was almost torrential and floods that came down that river were absolutely unbelievable.”

That amount of rain hadn’t been seen in McBride in 61 years. It was enough to erode 200 feet of shoreline along the river, eating into private properties. So the Village applied for funding and, under BC’s Flood Strategy, it received $2.95 million for erosion mitigation along a one-and-a-half kilometre stretch between Museum Road and Highway 16.
