Mayor Ron Paull will not step down after heated council meeting in Quesnel
QUESNEL — It was a heated council meeting on Tuesday night in Quesnel as Mayor Ron Paull resisted calls to step down as Mayor.
A march to support Truth and Reconciliation took place before the council meeting and concluded at Quesnel City Hall. An estimated 350-400 people were in attendance. The march was in response to the revelation that the Mayor Ron Paull’s wife, Pat Morton, was distributing a book that downplayed the history of residential schools in Canada.
Mayor Ron Paull was not chairing Tuesday’s meeting and Councillor Mitch Vik deputized as Acting Mayor. Councillor Scott Elliot said that since the last council meeting on March 19, he alleges that it has come to light Mayor Paull has also been handing out the controversial book. Mayor Paull says that it is a “false allegation” from Councillor Elliot that he was handing out the book. In regards to calls for him to step down, Paull says that he doesn’t “intend on going anywhere.” He also said that he expresses regret that this has happened.
Councillors Elliot, Laurey Anne Roodenburg and Tony Goulet all called for the Mayor to step down, including calls from members of the public who were present at the meeting.
